Leadership & Teamwork

Leadership and Teamwork programs and services are custom-designed by Sheehan Leadership Consulting for each client, based upon a needs assessment of the organization, individual, group, and/or team. Programs and services can take the form of seminars, workshops, and/or executive coaching. Seminars and workshops can be conducted for a single day, for consecutive days, or for multiple days over a period of time. Executive coaching for individuals and/or teams can be provided in person or by phone in a variety of time periods.

All programs and services are directed by Rob Sheehan.  Associates may also be utilized, especially where group sizes are large or specialists on certain topics are needed.

Following are more details on these services:

What could leadership and/or teamwork seminars and workshops be like?

Educational programs are far more effective when they are based on a needs assessment of the participants and connected to specific performance goals of those participants.  Discerning these needs and goals is the first step in creating a program.

The minimum length of our programs is typically one day, though there are exceptions. There is no maximum length.

Topics covered in programs will depend upon the needs and goals of clients and participants. Some topics that have been included in client programs are:  leading change, leading organization transformation, change management, leadership transition and succession, ethical decision-making, leadership styles, culture change, performance management, goal setting, creating high performance teams, situational leadership, empowerment, inspirational visioning, producing breakthrough results, and more. All programs are interactive and utilize a variety of mediums to create a high energy experience.

We find that all programs are more effective when executive coaching and/or team coaching is utilized as a follow-up to the program.

How does individual executive coaching work?

Executive coaching is very popular these days and means different things to different people. We provide “leadership development” coaching, “performance coaching,” and—ideally—a combination of both. We do not provide career coaching or “life” coaching, though these issues may be addressed briefly in the context of other coaching activities.

Leadership Development coaching focuses on assisting the executive in developing and implementing a specific leadership development plan for her/himself that is based on an assessment of their developmental interests. Various assessment tools may be utilized in this process (e.g., 360 feedback, MBTI, StrengthsFinder). Coaching can cover the developmental stage of the plan or also extend periodically over a period of time during the implementation stage.

Performance Coaching is centered upon a specific performance goal and/or challenge an executive has identified. The coaching sessions are targeted at developing and implementing a plan to accomplish the goal and meet the challenge. Depending on the obstacles and roadblocks faced by the executive, this type of coaching can also include some individualized “teaching” if there are some leadership skill areas that the executive needs to meet the goal.

All executive coaching is provided solely by Rob Sheehan.

How does team coaching work?

The Tuckman “group development” model (1965) of forming, storming, norming, performing has been memorized by thousands. It’s elegant. It rhymes. Yet, teams often find it difficult to apply this concept – and other more complex concepts of high performance teamwork – without outside facilitation and coaching.

Team coaching begins with a needs assessment of the team and the identification of performance goals to which the team is committed.  Next, tools are provided to assist the team in establishing its “norms” in the form of a “team charter.” Depending on team needs, some educational programming may be provided (e.g., leadership styles, project management, group dynamics) along with the coaching.

Once the team’s essential needs are met, coaching sessions are held with the team on an intermittent basis to assess the effectiveness of teamwork (e.g., “Is there healthy conflict?”  “Are they avoiding Groupthink?”) and the success of the team in meeting its performance goals.

The goal of the team coaching is to teach the team to be self-sufficient and to teach each member of the team to be a more effective team member of other teams.
